Day 43 – July 25, 2015 Napoleon ND to Marion ND – 81 miles
Bumble Bee – Audrey:
A day finished. We are sitting in the Duck Inn Lounge in Marion ND about 90 miles outside of Fargo. Far from the Interstate and anything else for that matter. The other patrons of the bar are talking about fishing, ice fishing and building their ice fishing huts. Yep that is where we are, North Dakota!
There are no hotels here and no campsites but the bar tender, who is also the secretary of parks in this town of 133 said we could sleep in the town park. They have toilets! Yes, this will be better than staying behind the post office in Montana.
We did a long day. It was hard for me. My knee was good surprisingly but I got a horrible cramp in my left hamstring muscle so I had to stop riding about 5 miles in and do some stretches right in the middle of the road. It didn’t help. I had a painful 39 miles to Gackle.
Gackle is a special place since they have the “Honey Hub” which is a cyclists respite. That means that the Miller Family, who moved back to ND to become beekeepers after living in the Bay Area for years, decided to create a little basement apartment with a couple of beds, shower, and laundry for the long haul cyclists. Well we went there and did a load of laundry and found some shelter from a thunderstorm. It was a nice 2 hr break. Since we had only down 40 miles we decided to venture on. But for those who are seeking a bike friendly place to stay, look it up. Gackle North Dakota – Honey Hub. Go Beekeepers!!!! save our world.
So we peddled on. Cramps gone and energy fine. I managed to make it but at about 75 miles we both started fading. We found this little town of Marion with one bar that served us pizza and PBR and a town with a park. Camp we will. Tomorrow we hope to make it to Fargo 91 miles!!!
